Sadly, over the winter both hives did not survive (not sure what happened with the Blue hive, but in the Pink it appeared the Queen died). Thus, early this season I replaced both hives and was surprised by how quickly they took off. In addition, the difference in bee appearance is more pronounced this year. In the Blue hive the bees are large and dark while the Pink hive has small golden honeybees. So far walking around my yard and neighborhood I usually hear constant buzzing, which I'm sure are my bees out doing their work. As the weather continues to heat up so will the activity of both hives!<br />

June 2013 Sunset issue had a wonderful section on Seattle, with a focus on urban beekeeping. I was lucky enough to be one of the three beekeepers featured, along with Gavin Stephenson, executive chef, Fairmont Olympic Hotel and Renee Erickson, chef and co-owner, The Walrus and the Carpenter. So, if you come across this June Sunset, go to page 34 and check it out! :)Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301530498656423733noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5247364797193816299.post-20824459721625418012013-03-23T17:42:00.001-07:002013-03-23T17:42:54.690-07:00Honey Tasting Audrey's Honey review: http://honeyfiend.com/honey-tasting-audreys-honey-from-seattle/<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Well, the bee season has come to a close. This year was similar to last, as the pink hive was stronger and more successful than the blue. I decided not to extract any honey from the blue and I removed about 10 frames from the pink. After that I fed both hives to increase the odds of both surviving the winter. I have again sold my honey to the Volunteer Park Cafe http://alwaysfreshgoodness.com/. This is a great restaurant and bakes really yummy food! The proceeds from my sales went to help Pollinator Pathways, an organization working to make Seattle more green. Pollinator Pathways is creating<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 16px;"> "a mile-long row along Columbia Street, standard planting strips (usually a band of grass between sidewalk and street) will be transformed into pollinator-friendly gardens, offering viable food and habitat to these vitally important insects." Of course honey bees are one of the most important pollinators. </span></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 16px;">On another note, during October I was interviewed and photographed by Sunset magazine. They are doing a spread on bees and beekeepers in Seattle. I am still unsure if I will be featured, but fingers crossed I may be in the March issue if all works out. </span></span></div>

Savannah Bee Company- Charleston </div>
<br />
Hello again!<br />
<br />
It has been a long time since I've last posted and much has happened. Both hive lived through the winter and now are busy about my yard. The pink hive contains "the party girls" always out and busy. I plan to pull frames of honey from this hive and hope for about 40 pounds. The blue hive is more quiet and subdued. Because there is less activity in this hive and I have decided to feed them again. Sadly, I plan on not pulling any honey from this hive in order for them to have sufficient food to survive through the winter. <br />
<br />
About a month ago I decided to split both hives in order to help prevent a swarm. By splitting the hives I mean taking about 3-8 frames from the hives to move to another location. One must be careful not to move the queen when doing this, because then the hive will have no bee production occurring and will collapse. During the splitting, I accidentally removed the blue hive's queen. She had never been the greatest queen, so it was not the end of the world. Thus, we got a new queen and placed her into the hive about 3 weeks ago. This new queen appears very happy, for she has been laying a lot of eggs! <br />
<br />
During June I took a trip to the southeast coast (Charleston to DC) and was very delighted to discover the Savannah Bee Company store in Charleston! I probably spent an hour walking around, sampling the many honey flavors, and buying Savannah bee gear! The store was great and so fun visit. I bought my fare share of honey from them too! ;)<br />
<br />
Glad that the sun has finally come out in Seattle!<br />
<br />

Once that happened I could scrape it off. Then, just to make sure I got all of the "junk," I strained the honey into another bucket with an opening at the bottom so I could fill my jars easily. I had two sizes of honey this year, the jar I had last year which was 3.75 oz and then a new smaller jar at 2 oz. I probably could have filled more 3.75 oz jars then I did. The honey has a mellow taste at first, but then what seems like an after kick of flavor. It's different from last year, but both are good. Now all I have to do is label the jars! <div><br /></div><div>-Audrey </div>Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301530498656423733noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5247364797193816299.post-33553119179372201522012-01-02T16:39:00.000-08:002012-01-02T17:03:37.822-08:00EXTRACTING<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwnNxiD22QEhUxcUag1JKRIMt1d0HTBNk1ntI3PKwMNlCO248ThRWFYvJlKRqtfj9LD1hAaKn_QkqfLmG6QyOJ0h3PcboOr-q13Gc2jlqUxJxOGYfn4SqFGrsGp1cRE942csJT4Z3uXvI/s1600/P1020443.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwnNxiD22QEhUxcUag1JKRIMt1d0HTBNk1ntI3PKwMNlCO248ThRWFYvJlKRqtfj9LD1hAaKn_QkqfLmG6QyOJ0h3PcboOr-q13Gc2jlqUxJxOGYfn4SqFGrsGp1cRE942csJT4Z3uXvI/s320/P1020443.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693202009267729442" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ4iG_oqrqjSeQY_SmcteTtUSj2GQ8QwCtHs5t2U1nrQYJv66nDN0eVym0HW7hW22mwISFBsWVc3yib_TWiVRotjsquKCXpuOT2g6ldcppTkKzO3W4DUm1UAyyIarAgU526uaqp4fQC-A/s1600/P1020414.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ4iG_oqrqjSeQY_SmcteTtUSj2GQ8QwCtHs5t2U1nrQYJv66nDN0eVym0HW7hW22mwISFBsWVc3yib_TWiVRotjsquKCXpuOT2g6ldcppTkKzO3W4DUm1UAyyIarAgU526uaqp4fQC-A/s320/P1020414.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693202000119814402" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6d7BftMsb7hzaHgDL2Ea12S6cUMDbthoDqXcv0lULE1Wrn8haaoDKFUSKzDr8tsSPZOO0LlmqfJX_tLQIkO4XiQGR92XWBlaG0yJxf-GDE5_bN9E_EqoRamdvos68pXkc2GmoeX9tOO8/s1600/P1020413.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6d7BftMsb7hzaHgDL2Ea12S6cUMDbthoDqXcv0lULE1Wrn8haaoDKFUSKzDr8tsSPZOO0LlmqfJX_tLQIkO4XiQGR92XWBlaG0yJxf-GDE5_bN9E_EqoRamdvos68pXkc2GmoeX9tOO8/s320/P1020413.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693201991182001634" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeyUcv6vamKPEPYNvTurVsV3xzOLHXpOvupR5Rem3org7r-Umf5gh6T1QKAXx-Fk1BPblpcyXf1doUxbea_H_o2s_FkrFrti3Ekn21BSOEEFDk0h8B38T_CEYziD6LygiqMYCBfbhYEAM/s1600/P1020400.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeyUcv6vamKPEPYNvTurVsV3xzOLHXpOvupR5Rem3org7r-Umf5gh6T1QKAXx-Fk1BPblpcyXf1doUxbea_H_o2s_FkrFrti3Ekn21BSOEEFDk0h8B38T_CEYziD6LygiqMYCBfbhYEAM/s320/P1020400.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693201990059399778" /></a><br />IT'S HONEY EXTRACTING TIME! YAY! <div><br /></div><div>I love this part of the year, for I have all the honey I want and it is fun to taste the difference between mine and others. I went over to Corky Luster's house, from Bh Honey, and used his extractor. This year my honey turned out MUCH darker than last year. Last year the honey was a light gold, but this time it is dark like maple syrup. Must be the different plants that the bees go to. I preferred how last year's honey looked. I only got about 25 pounds of honey, which is enough so I can sell to the Volunteer Park Cafe, give as gifts to friends, and keep some for my family. </div><div><br /></div><div>-Audrey </div>Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301530498656423733noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5247364797193816299.post-17182898580827683042012-01-02T16:23:00.000-08:002012-01-02T16:39:19.835-08:00Pulling Frames<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirEVUvRI9vjrdFPXaJHOVEHBLbwTTE5rWhSGdhFYc7c_bRtm_nYZrczqxVL6MO2rMpA6DaSKNZ4XoNCkKBqtvsxwZ6aNcr_cPp1Usik4V9-pk9tzzu65WmjzMzjjk89azqPQ2VSf1sxPI/s1600/IMG_2531.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirEVUvRI9vjrdFPXaJHOVEHBLbwTTE5rWhSGdhFYc7c_bRtm_nYZrczqxVL6MO2rMpA6DaSKNZ4XoNCkKBqtvsxwZ6aNcr_cPp1Usik4V9-pk9tzzu65WmjzMzjjk89azqPQ2VSf1sxPI/s320/IMG_2531.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693196670904393442" /></a><br />Sorry it has been such a long time since my last post, I don't know where the time has gone! I will review what the hives have been up to in the past months in the next few posts. In this post I'll summarize the pulling of frames to use for extracting honey.<div><br /></div><div>The blue hive had a weak year, so to maximize the potential of survival through winter I decided not to pull any frames from them, so they have all the honey they can eat through the winter. It's sad that I couldn't get any honey from them, and I wonder how different the taste would have been from the pink hive! For the pink I ended up pulling about a box of frames, not as much as last year. I think the problem was that Seattle had a cool and rainy summer. Many frames were filled with honey on one side, but not the other! Oh well. To help both hives through the winter I will feed them till around October. Hope the honey tastes yummy! </div><div><br /></div><div>-Audrey </div>Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301530498656423733noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5247364797193816299.post-39454660721452955952011-08-14T16:55:00.001-07:002011-08-14T17:20:40.311-07:00Backyard = DONE!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq9fYpe-uULRVPmi5Po8H5SXY5cV9Fz7ohPfOeG__1ISTwBivVlluwH9G0szuVjltjKAE5XWRV3EydLiVjEqUQDwYOST0gHs3s-5B1BOD8IIBzmVXHu8BGLloiMZKCYqqYQppEun2QYSc/s1600/IMG_2398.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq9fYpe-uULRVPmi5Po8H5SXY5cV9Fz7ohPfOeG__1ISTwBivVlluwH9G0szuVjltjKAE5XWRV3EydLiVjEqUQDwYOST0gHs3s-5B1BOD8IIBzmVXHu8BGLloiMZKCYqqYQppEun2QYSc/s320/IMG_2398.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5640870617649058562" /></a>

<br />Finally, the yard is finished! Though it took the entire summer (basically) to do, I am glad that the fence is up and that the plants are in the boxes. This summer has been terrible in Seattle. While most everywhere else in the USA is steaming, Seattle still has not reached 80 degrees. The bees have suffered from this, plus getting such a late start. Neither hive is as great as last years. The blue one is the weaker of the two. The queen has not laid many eggs, and their honey supply is limited. I will most likely not pull any honey from the hive, but feed them sugar water or old frames full of honey from last year this winter. The pink hive is better. They have a stronger population and enough honey that we can take some, but not much. I will probably wait 3 or 4 more weeks till I start pulling frames for honey extraction. I should work on labels! <div>

I could go on and on raving about everything. The ham, the wonderful narrow alleyways, the stores. I wish I could go back soon. On the trip I had my eye out for unique honey from Spain. While strolling down a street in Barcelona I came across a small store selling honey. I quickly popped in and found two jars/flavors I liked. One is <i>Miel de Romero </i>and the other <i>Miel de Azahar</i>. I have opened the second one, and it is scrumptious! All this honey eating has me thinking on when I will extract honey from my own hives. Hopefully soon! <div><br /></div><div>-Audrey </div>Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301530498656423733noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5247364797193816299.post-87074880366613464352011-07-02T18:15:00.000-07:002011-07-02T19:07:17.399-07:00Apiary construction almost done!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-KCTrNKD5HhNdaROVXNV-8dQKMDOywCIPXgk5aIl9IGvbPicOep6hhoRvizPfn4eirgtPgPqbZF4dEpPTLuFwvl1Qzto6rnn3vh_OaLDbN8Qy5MhgM8i2W8ovOW9WRvISXN3YpQ4dRQ/s1600/IMG_2044.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-KCTrNKD5HhNdaROVXNV-8dQKMDOywCIPXgk5aIl9IGvbPicOep6hhoRvizPfn4eirgtPgPqbZF4dEpPTLuFwvl1Qzto6rnn3vh_OaLDbN8Qy5MhgM8i2W8ovOW9WRvISXN3YpQ4dRQ/s320/IMG_2044.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624938771339459026" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaL6nJFb3xAlHdjXVsbuS-i2-n24DHR45m4tBXapJ-IgK2axw1-7_ijE3yW-d7wvo4kjBLaizDkjUs9cRXnxOYONPVt08BMz-YwBYWN-lLKKS9sX0ihYeNP-HoNodJnf9vwxhJqs8VUHg/s1600/IMG_2038.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaL6nJFb3xAlHdjXVsbuS-i2-n24DHR45m4tBXapJ-IgK2axw1-7_ijE3yW-d7wvo4kjBLaizDkjUs9cRXnxOYONPVt08BMz-YwBYWN-lLKKS9sX0ihYeNP-HoNodJnf9vwxhJqs8VUHg/s320/IMG_2038.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624938765049697634" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizu_3KqzGYFqSB4RWQcr2gYSAb3BFaR39UiJSXWDGnTOhaLDWBc6aPet5xRujtzyOhyphenhyphen3wd41_gY1Fpt4Nfdah_DNO5PCoYNmgRMYy3n_kvKfc9_maVViskEaPoPlfnqLqCIV5GiTGNwiQ/s1600/IMG_2037.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizu_3KqzGYFqSB4RWQcr2gYSAb3BFaR39UiJSXWDGnTOhaLDWBc6aPet5xRujtzyOhyphenhyphen3wd41_gY1Fpt4Nfdah_DNO5PCoYNmgRMYy3n_kvKfc9_maVViskEaPoPlfnqLqCIV5GiTGNwiQ/s320/IMG_2037.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624938759299869378" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfpMc_mBlk2QaRy0JNshBJyvM6jDacym3d25TypaPdl97ArNOAOmJ3RrungC0LfDUF_eSgTTXCiV7i1_5Nj0oRuXlHKVB7Z1Kz41xw7K9c835RYWlD6_7Ixih0rhCuVTj_32dQVt00WjU/s1600/IMG_2036.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfpMc_mBlk2QaRy0JNshBJyvM6jDacym3d25TypaPdl97ArNOAOmJ3RrungC0LfDUF_eSgTTXCiV7i1_5Nj0oRuXlHKVB7Z1Kz41xw7K9c835RYWlD6_7Ixih0rhCuVTj_32dQVt00WjU/s320/IMG_2036.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624938758064517714" /></a><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Eek! I have been extremely busy these past months! Juggling school, finals, summer plans... I sadly have had not much time to update this blog. The backyard construction has made progress. All the boxes have been made and placed. The wonderful gate that will lead into the bee section of the yard has been delivered. Teddy and I are in it, as well as the bees. Seattle has had one of the worst spring/summers in history (or at least in my life time). We have gone from winter to winter and finally 70 degree weather. Spring never came. So, due to all the weather delays the bees came late this year. At the end of May they arrived. I hope this doesn't affect the honey output... The blue hive is quieter. The blue one though has a better location, for the sun hits them earlier in the morning. Today my mom and I opened the hives. The pink hive does seem to be doing better. More honey and eggs. Because of this we have added a box, making the pink hive three boxes tall and the blue two. We will most likely add a third box next week to the blue hive. Double the honey! To help accommodate the expansion, my family is redoing our backyard. We just started and must hurry for the bees are coming in May (my bees are a little late). I have begun painting the bee boxes for the new hive. They will be pink, for I have extra pink paint, and the other hive will stay the same blue. The new queen's name will be announced when they come, but it does have something to do with the play A Midsummers Night's Dream. In the rest of the yard we are going to be putting raised beds with bee happy flowers. I hope it all looks good in the end. <div><br /></div><div>-Audrey </div>Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301530498656423733noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5247364797193816299.post-36538218203583325812011-03-12T17:19:00.000-08:002011-03-12T18:19:04.583-08:00All Quiet on the Western Front<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLHn-iYu4w8ocYBkD10rGPWpabKMjoaQCarTwtvH7rUpb-n4pf7FI7t_JnCv50KjprMZzb0v2QTfqtyJnbBwoFCxwtE4W_z-i33xBGeQn0FCvOwaKytEYGWtnsVfP3d7NC3ADWhzBfkww/s1600/IMG_1865.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLHn-iYu4w8ocYBkD10rGPWpabKMjoaQCarTwtvH7rUpb-n4pf7FI7t_JnCv50KjprMZzb0v2QTfqtyJnbBwoFCxwtE4W_z-i33xBGeQn0FCvOwaKytEYGWtnsVfP3d7NC3ADWhzBfkww/s320/IMG_1865.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583382580830623874" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Poor bees!</div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoztTekVd82cHogvmrB_lPbqK9ZF-_cboOnHEfpZ0kS_0TFQaQ_xPYhuj2CRmfGlc4wj8zoHZsfyeoojWa09a_R0YcxjgwrReK6DRHM1ouN1oX6PxbF8UtPu7gga4uYg4TKtfagSM7geU/s1600/IMG_1863.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoztTekVd82cHogvmrB_lPbqK9ZF-_cboOnHEfpZ0kS_0TFQaQ_xPYhuj2CRmfGlc4wj8zoHZsfyeoojWa09a_R0YcxjgwrReK6DRHM1ouN1oX6PxbF8UtPu7gga4uYg4TKtfagSM7geU/s320/IMG_1863.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583382576645144082" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Teddy was not going to get close to the hive!</div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiVueS0YfPR4ctvKROiFf4WKNj4yWJ2Ze7rD3KQtCk-brMXJTvrcLYLVt0UgR5HDIeGGSwmkWY-VGFtgLeT-dGIdaLaxht0laPVQqWHCdEqM4kdQOgZfl3Me5Ca7q88xBkfHAhi0zVReo/s1600/IMG_1862.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiVueS0YfPR4ctvKROiFf4WKNj4yWJ2Ze7rD3KQtCk-brMXJTvrcLYLVt0UgR5HDIeGGSwmkWY-VGFtgLeT-dGIdaLaxht0laPVQqWHCdEqM4kdQOgZfl3Me5Ca7q88xBkfHAhi0zVReo/s320/IMG_1862.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583382569633269458" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtLbLXLMIUICqBlMLGZeWNUcPEY4l0Uzm-avwzPuvRMZTrf75D_h4Rg0tEIyUBwfwvd4t_QBkCYKByVu1Ud3MKBx6N2tCD6KWy0SPXMeDb-LU2Lr24Rn9brvOjsAB3ejIH4pzX6DzIouI/s1600/IMG_1858.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtLbLXLMIUICqBlMLGZeWNUcPEY4l0Uzm-avwzPuvRMZTrf75D_h4Rg0tEIyUBwfwvd4t_QBkCYKByVu1Ud3MKBx6N2tCD6KWy0SPXMeDb-LU2Lr24Rn9brvOjsAB3ejIH4pzX6DzIouI/s320/IMG_1858.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583382564811741762" /></a><br />After having suspicious thoughts that the bees might be dead, it was confirmed when Corky, from Bh Honey, came to open the hive and checked with me. The bees were dead! He thinks that they died from a mite (he did give the name of the mite, but I forgot it). <div>On the brighter side, we are redesigning our backyard. Instead of grass under the hives there will be gravel. Also, for this coming spring I ordered not one, but TWO hives. Double the honey==Double the money! :) I don't have any more space in my yard for hives, so two is the max. Last week my family saw the movie, Queen of the Sun playing at a little theater close to my house. The movie was about bees, how they are important for our economy and lives, but are dying due to Honeybee Collapse Disorder. I enjoyed watching, though I am not sure about the rest of my family. The new bees should be coming in April, so I have a lot to do before then!</div><div><br /></div><div>-Audrey</div>Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301530498656423733noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5247364797193816299.post-5940536807196541542010-12-31T19:25:00.000-08:002010-12-31T19:31:16.598-08:002011<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigV3G5Nc_zseLu2QjvzTuF-bIuLxBaQABEEoYcNdzOB_-8ZzaLMaSs-Btg8sK9Gc1V_fv3RKrGcVwvstxdPqDvlFxZ1aKFw2IXv5V8BlmRICG6-1ge95D8Fr8YhBtSOMyehnAa7AslI3A/s1600/nyb.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 87px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigV3G5Nc_zseLu2QjvzTuF-bIuLxBaQABEEoYcNdzOB_-8ZzaLMaSs-Btg8sK9Gc1V_fv3RKrGcVwvstxdPqDvlFxZ1aKFw2IXv5V8BlmRICG6-1ge95D8Fr8YhBtSOMyehnAa7AslI3A/s320/nyb.gif" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5557054628699301938" /></a><br />Happy New Year!!!!! Snow does not usually happen this early in winter, so it took everyone by surprise. The bees, of course, are not happy about this. They would rather be in nice, hot weather. The snow was about five inches high on the top of the hive. I brushed it off when I had the chance. Sadly, this week I started noticing more and more dead bees. Then I woke up to see hundreds of them on the ground. I was worried, and so was my mom, so we e-mail Corky Luster from Bh Honey to ask him if this was normal. He e-mailed back saying, "This is the season when you will see dead bees on the ground and all over the bottom of the hive. They are dying at home instead of while they forage". I hope Corky is right about that, for I do not want to open the hive in the spring seeing thousands of little dead bodies.Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301530498656423733noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5247364797193816299.post-58628049665349151462010-11-21T18:59:00.000-08:002010-11-21T20:48:35.075-08:00Good Night Bees<div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha9Qr4PJRQdFfsku-znmOnRa2v4v-bM22YkrgMonriLH3ynHlHCNeiDeC1XXtpqy5cF5rt_QmkUoHhYddMAtfDN0Z1amhMkUE7ICne-1in3YeVuJPCxukN1WaVx5ZiDsI5XMxcaNkFz5M/s320/colony_poster.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542227754499854258" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY2YWeXQJKWv1Am3C9sDFwxNMGU7Mo6XTGEger5jb4tayS6rY3fRI1Jrwsi7p8BEdmHa6KACKTakdSxXnRrGzdsfRXoyOe8sWfJRL3AeAHr_iFfWq9F4V9orTW2HoXGVbOflnzCmwwyIE/s1600/IMG_1574.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY2YWeXQJKWv1Am3C9sDFwxNMGU7Mo6XTGEger5jb4tayS6rY3fRI1Jrwsi7p8BEdmHa6KACKTakdSxXnRrGzdsfRXoyOe8sWfJRL3AeAHr_iFfWq9F4V9orTW2HoXGVbOflnzCmwwyIE/s320/IMG_1574.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542230984642902258" /></a><br />About 3 weeks ago the hive got closed down. I sadly could not be there (too busy with school) so Corky and my mom did it. They put wood chips in the top box to collect moisture. Also a mouse guard got put on the entrance, so the bees look like they are in jail. I have been seeing more dead bees around, so I hope nothing bad is going on inside. <div><br /></div><div>Tonight I watched the movie Colony at the Northwest Film Forum on Capitol Hill. School started, so I have been busy with homework (I have at least one quiz per week), cross country, and in my free time packaging honey jars. So, in this past month lots have happened, but I will try to summarize as short as possible.</div><div> Corky (from Bh Honey) had to open the hive with just my mom, as I was busy and so was he. But, the last time I opened the hive with him we saw that a queen cell had hatched! We think the old queen and new queen probably had a fight. The next week when the hive opened Corky saw eggs, so he concluded that a small swarm had happened, leaving the new queen to run the hive. All seems well in the hive, which is good.</div><div>Last week Corky and my mom opened the hive to get it ready for the winter. I have started feeding the bees again, but will stop soon. They are drinking a lot of the sugar water. The Volunteer Park Cafe is still selling my honey, so if you have a chance stop on by do. </div><div>These past few days there have been many dead bees next to the hive. When I e-mailed Corky he said that was normal. The rain has been bad for the bees, for they like the HOT weather. Well, will most likely open the hive just one more time before winter. The manufacturing has been slow. I sold 12 jars to the Volunteer Park Cafe, and they all sold out, so I sold them another 12! Hope I can sell a dozen more there. The King 5 news crew did a special on the cafe, and they showed a picture of my honey, plus talked about it/me for a little bit. I had no idea this was going to happen so it was a nice surprise. I still have to give a lot of my honey away to some of my friends, for they keep asking when their jars are coming. I respond "Hopefully soon!" My list of give-away jars is growing. People tell me they love the clean taste of the honey---I agree! Those bees were fantastic. I'm noticing less activity around the hives. I left more frames (more then I needed) in the hive just to make sure the bees have enough to eat during the winter, so I only have 40-50 pounds of honey. That is good for one hive on the first year. My mom and I are thinking loosely on having a second hive in the back yard next year. Extracting honey is simpler than I thought. First, I used a large hot knife/blade to cut off the top of the honey, for it had been capped in the frame. I also used a little comb to get some more wax and stuff off the frame. Then I would put the frame into the extractor. It looks like a big tub with six spots for frames. Once I put six frames in I turn the extractor on and the frames start to spin. I let them spin for a while, for the honey is flung to the side of the extractor and then goes down to the bottom. After sometime I turned the extractor off and opened the cap at the bottom. The honey then comes out into a bucket I have waiting. Once I went through all the frames it was time to go. When I was home I let the honey sit till Monday (that's when Corky came again) for all the wax that got in the honey will float to the top, so then I could scoop it off. </span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'times new roman';">When Monday came Corky came to tell us what to do with the honey and to open the hive with us again. We put boxes on the hive that were full of the honey remains from Saturday, so the hive is now seven boxes tall again. The bees seemed nice, for no one got stung. There were queen cells, which should stop soon, as it is so late in the season. I did not see the queen, but there were signs of her, for example eggs and larva. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'times new roman';">When we closed the hive Corky showed us how to pour the honey through strainers into another bucket. Mom and I spent the day pouring honey through the strainers. We finished yesterday. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'times new roman';">Today I even started filling jars. I will update you either tomorrow or Friday on what has progressed on the honey. I'm meeting with a neighborhood store tomorrow to see if they would like to sell my honey.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'times new roman';">-Audrey </span></div>Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301530498656423733noreply@blogger.com0
